PIGGERY

MARKET RESEARCH /ANALYSIS

1.      Piggery is widely practiced in the local environment in this country, in the initial stages land, rooms where the feeds can be mixed and stored, pig house/ shelter, water facilities which include: pumps, pipes, and taps drinking nipples, self-feeders, electricity, strong

2. labor force and feed scale are a great requirement for a successful project; a young pig in Uganda literally cost 50,000 thousand Ugandan shillings, it will take approximately three months before the pig can be sold. However, another approach is by breeding the pigs, you will have to a quire the sow which usually cost about 200,000-400,000 and above depending on the size. Breeding pigs enables better quality of pigs, large in size, height and meat quality. Better qualities include large white pigs, and Danish landrace.

The life cycle of a pig from conception to birth, through growth and then slaughter can take up to 310 days, pigs breed at all times of the year, regardless of the season. However, pigs can be affected by seasonal infertility in the warmer months. Once a sow has been mated, the production cycle commences,

A young female pig is reproductively mature around the age of eight months, the gestation period is usually 111 days approximately 3 months 3 weeks and 3 days.

In a year it can litter 2times (twice). Sows typically give birth to eight to nine piglets with each litter, with some litters having as many as 12 piglets.

If there are more piglets born in a litter they are usually smaller. Once the piglets are born the mother and babies should be separated into their own stalls to prevent the sow from accidentally lying on or rolling over one of the piglets
